Parenting Plan Mediation in Indiana

About parenting plans
A well-designed parenting plan gives children consistency and helps parents understand what is expected of each of them. It addresses more than where children will spend their time. It can also establish how parents will communicate, make important decisions, handle schedule changes, and resolve future disagreements.

Genesis Mediation of Indiana helps separated, divorced, and unmarried parents create practical parenting plans based on their children’s needs and their family’s circumstances.

What is a parenting plan?

A parenting plan is a written agreement describing how parents will share responsibilities and care for their children while living in separate households.

A clear plan can reduce misunderstandings by answering common questions before they become conflicts. It also gives children greater stability by establishing predictable routines and expectations in both homes.

When an agreed parenting plan is approved and entered by the court, it becomes an enforceable court order.

What can a parenting plan address?

Every family is different, but parenting plans commonly address:

  • Regular parenting-time schedules
  • Exchanges between households
  • Holidays, birthdays, and school breaks
  • Vacations and travel
  • Education and school-related decisions
  • Healthcare and medical decisions
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Transportation responsibilities
  • Parent-to-parent communication
  • Communication between children and each parent
  • Childcare arrangements
  • Schedule changes and unexpected events
  • Relocation and other major life changes
  • Methods for resolving future disagreements

Parents of children with disabilities or complex medical, educational, or developmental needs may require additional planning. Learn more about our Special Needs Parenting Plan services.

How does parenting-plan mediation work?

A neutral mediator helps both parents identify the matters that need to be addressed, discuss their concerns, and consider possible solutions.

The mediator does not take sides or decide what the parenting plan will say. Parents retain control over the terms they agree to accept.

The process generally includes:

    1. Identifying the children’s needs and existing family schedule
    2. Determining the issues that need to be resolved
    3. Discussing each parent’s concerns and priorities
    4. Exploring practical scheduling and decision-making options
    5. Working toward terms both parents can accept
    6. Putting the agreed terms in writing

Parents may participate together or meet separately with the mediator when appropriate. Sessions are available online or in person.

Do parents have to agree before beginning mediation?

No. Parents often begin mediation because they disagree about schedules, decision-making, communication, or another important issue.

You do not need to arrive with a completed plan. You only need to be willing to participate, exchange necessary information, and consider possible solutions. The mediator helps organize the discussion and keep it focused on decisions that need to be made.

Indiana’s Parenting Time Guidelines encourage parents to try to resolve parenting-time disagreements before returning to court. If court action is initiated over a parenting-time dispute, mediation may be required unless the court orders otherwise.

Can an existing parenting plan be changed?

Parenting plans sometimes need to change as children grow and family circumstances evolve. Mediation can help parents discuss modifications involving:

  • School schedules
  • Work schedules
  • Transportation
  • A parent’s relocation
  • A child’s medical or educational needs
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Communication problems
  • A schedule that is no longer practical

If parents reach an agreement, the proposed modification may need to be submitted to the court for approval before it changes an existing court order.
